Letter Q worksheets and activities

Explore Q and q through looking, playful marks and a short shared game. Capital Q resembles an O with an added tail. Lowercase q has a rounded body and a stem reaching down on the right in this font. Some handwriting styles finish the lower stroke differently, so follow the model used by the child’s school. Choose one part of the pack rather than expecting every page to be completed in one sitting.

Letter names and first sounds

A letter name is different from its sound in a word. Tap each separately. The examples show one common sound; letters can have other sounds.

Q q

quick · quiz · quack

qu usually represents two sounds, /k/ and /w/.

Synthesised British or American pronunciation, selected by the English edition in the header. Accents vary. Follow your school’s sound models and teaching sequence.

What we’re exploring

Recognize capital Q and lowercase q, compare their shapes and find them among other printed letters.

A little way to play

  1. Start with the large Q and q models. Say the letter name and invite your child to point to either form.
  2. Use a finger on the pale tracing models, then offer a pencil if wanted. Follow the child's school formation guidance rather than treating these outlines as stroke instructions.
  3. Try the letter hunt together. Each cell has a number so a grown-up can check the separate answer guide; the child can point, circle or color a match.
  4. Draw an O, then add a short tail to change it into Q. Make a lowercase q nearby and decorate the space around both letters with a patchwork quilt pattern. Keep the letter outlines uncoloured if that helps them stand out.
Make it easier

Cover most of the letter hunt and offer just two choices. Keep the Q / q model visible, and let an adult make the marks while your child points.

Try a little more

Compare Q with O and locate the tail before naming the letter. Compare lowercase q with p using the position of the stem. Avoid presenting mirrored forms as a timed test; a side-by-side reference is more helpful.

For the grown-up

Queen, quilt and quack show a common q-u partnership in English. Point to q first, then notice the u beside it. This observation is not a rule covering every English word; use school guidance when teaching how the letters represent sounds. These are original recognition resources, not a school phonics programme or a developmental test.

Answers & naming help

The matching forms are Q and q. The hunt has six target cells; their numbers are listed on the adult activity page. The example words queen, quilt, quack begin with q. Accept pointing or a description when the child is still learning the letter name.

How do I print this?

Choose your vocabulary and paper size, then download the PDF. Print at actual size or 100%. Use the low-ink option for outline activities; color-name cards still need their color to teach the word. Cut-and-stack mini-books are available in the flashcard maker.
