Alphabet chart

Keep the alphabet close by as a reference, not as a list a child must recite on demand. Each card pairs a capital letter with its lowercase partner. Point out letters in a familiar name, a favourite book or a sign, then come back to the chart to find the same form.

What we’re exploring

Notice written letters and begin recognising corresponding capital and lowercase forms.

A little way to play

  1. Show the whole alphabet, then choose one familiar letter such as the first letter in a name.
  2. Point to both forms and explain that a capital A and a lowercase a are both the letter A.
  3. Find the chosen letter on a book cover or another piece of print. Compare its shape with the chart.
  4. Return to one or two familiar letters on another day and add a new one when your child is interested.
Make it easier

Show just the first letter of a familiar name and one contrasting letter. Invite your child to find the matching form rather than name it.

Try a little more

Find capital letters at the start of names. Compare a pair such as C/c with A/a: some forms look similar and others look quite different.

For the grown-up

This chart shows letter names and forms; it does not teach a complete phonics sequence. Letter names and speech sounds are different. Z is commonly called “zed” in British English and “zee” in American English.

Answers & naming help

How do I print this?

Choose your vocabulary and paper size, then download the PDF. Print at actual size or 100%. Use the low-ink option for outline activities; colour-name cards still need their colour to teach the word. Cut-and-stack mini-books are available in the flashcard maker.
