Printable counters and counting mats

This pack contains ten counters in each of two designs, with outline versions for low-ink printing. Use just a few at a time. An adult can cut them out, or a child can point to counters left on the page. The accompanying mats give a clear place to move a group without needing an account or a special kit.

What we’re exploring

Make, move and compare small groups using a consistent set of counting pieces.

A little way to play

  1. An adult cuts the large counter circles or leaves them on their sheet.
  2. Put a small chosen group on the first mat and count each piece once.
  3. Move pieces to the second mat to represent a join or take-away story.
Make it easier

Use one, two or three counters with an adult doing the moving.

Try a little more

Find two different ways to split five counters between the mats.

For the grown-up

Supervise scissors and loose pieces. Paper counters are not suitable for a child who mouths small items; use large household objects or keep the sheet whole.

Answers & naming help

There are 20 counters: 10 with a ring and 10 with a cross. Five can be split as 0 and 5, 1 and 4, 2 and 3, or the reversed pairs.

How do I print this?

Choose your vocabulary and paper size, then download the PDF. Print at actual size or 100%. Use the low-ink option for outline activities; colour-name cards still need their colour to teach the word. Cut-and-stack mini-books are available in the flashcard maker.
