Letter F worksheets and activities

Explore F and f through looking, playful marks and a short shared game. Capital F has an upright with two bars, leaving the lower part open. Lowercase f looks different: it has a curved top and a crossing stroke in this font. Let a child compare the models instead of assuming the small form is a reduced capital. Choose one part of the pack rather than expecting every page to be completed in one sitting.

What we’re exploring

Recognise capital F and lowercase f, compare their shapes and find them among other printed letters.

A little way to play

  1. Start with the large F and f models. Say the letter name and invite your child to point to either form.
  2. Use a finger on the pale tracing models, then offer a pencil if wanted. Follow the child's school formation guidance rather than treating these outlines as stroke instructions.
  3. Try the letter hunt together. Each cell has a number so a grown-up can check the separate answer guide; the child can point, circle or colour a match.
  4. Make a paper F with three strips. Put it next to a drawing of a fish and invent a little fishing sign. Add f below the capital, using the printed model as a reference.
Make it easier

Cover most of the letter hunt and offer just two choices. Keep the F / f model visible, and let an adult make the marks while your child points.

Try a little more

Compare F with E: E has a bottom bar that F does not. Compare lowercase f with t by noticing the curved top and the position of the crossing stroke in the model you are using.

For the grown-up

Fish, fan and foot give you a mixture of things to point at or describe. Keep the focus on recognising the written letter, and choose a familiar picture if an example object is not available at home. These are original recognition resources, not a school phonics programme or a developmental test.

Answers & naming help

The matching forms are F and f. The hunt has six target cells; their numbers are listed on the adult activity page. The example words fish, fan, foot begin with f. Accept pointing or a description when the child is still learning the letter name.

How do I print this?

Choose your vocabulary and paper size, then download the PDF. Print at actual size or 100%. Use the low-ink option for outline activities; colour-name cards still need their colour to teach the word. Cut-and-stack mini-books are available in the flashcard maker.
