Letter S worksheets and activities

Explore S and s through looking, playful marks and a short shared game. Capital S and lowercase s share a winding curved shape. Follow the changes of direction slowly and compare the size of the two forms. The top and bottom curves may not be exactly equal in a printed font. Choose one part of the pack rather than expecting every page to be completed in one sitting.

What we’re exploring

Recognise capital S and lowercase s, compare their shapes and find them among other printed letters.

A little way to play

  1. Start with the large S and s models. Say the letter name and invite your child to point to either form.
  2. Use a finger on the pale tracing models, then offer a pencil if wanted. Follow the child's school formation guidance rather than treating these outlines as stroke instructions.
  3. Try the letter hunt together. Each cell has a number so a grown-up can check the separate answer guide; the child can point, circle or colour a match.
  4. Draw a wide S-shaped path for a finger to follow. Add a separate snake picture beside it rather than replacing the printed model. Make a smaller s underneath and compare where each curve changes direction.
Make it easier

Cover most of the letter hunt and offer just two choices. Keep the S / s model visible, and let an adult make the marks while your child points.

Try a little more

Compare S with the numeral 5: they may resemble one another, but the 5 includes straighter sections. Use an upright model when checking direction, since a reversed curve can be hard to notice without a reference.

For the grown-up

Sun, sock and snake are example words. A familiar sock offers an easy real object to pair with the written label. You can ask the child to find s on the page while an adult does the naming or writing. These are original recognition resources, not a school phonics programme or a developmental test.

Answers & naming help

The matching forms are S and s. The hunt has six target cells; their numbers are listed on the adult activity page. The example words sun, sock, snake begin with s. Accept pointing or a description when the child is still learning the letter name.

How do I print this?

Choose your vocabulary and paper size, then download the PDF. Print at actual size or 100%. Use the low-ink option for outline activities; colour-name cards still need their colour to teach the word. Cut-and-stack mini-books are available in the flashcard maker.
