Letter P worksheets and activities

Explore P and p through looking, playful marks and a short shared game. Capital P has a tall stem and one rounded section near the top. Lowercase p has a rounded body and a stem that reaches below the writing line. Point to where the rounded part joins its stem in each form. Choose one part of the pack rather than expecting every page to be completed in one sitting.

What we’re exploring

Recognise capital P and lowercase p, compare their shapes and find them among other printed letters.

A little way to play

  1. Start with the large P and p models. Say the letter name and invite your child to point to either form.
  2. Use a finger on the pale tracing models, then offer a pencil if wanted. Follow the child's school formation guidance rather than treating these outlines as stroke instructions.
  3. Try the letter hunt together. Each cell has a number so a grown-up can check the separate answer guide; the child can point, circle or colour a match.
  4. Make a capital P from a straight strip and a curved paper section. Draw p underneath with its stem below a lightly drawn baseline. Add a pig picture nearby without turning the letter itself into an unclear drawing.
Make it easier

Cover most of the letter hunt and offer just two choices. Keep the P / p model visible, and let an adult make the marks while your child points.

Try a little more

Compare P with B: B has an additional lower rounded section. Compare p with q using the side of the stem and the direction of the lower part. Give the child time to look back at the model.

For the grown-up

Pig, pen and pan are example words. A pen is useful to point at while an adult writes the label. Keep small caps away from children who mouth objects, and allow the child to choose rather than handle the item. These are original recognition resources, not a school phonics programme or a developmental test.

Answers & naming help

The matching forms are P and p. The hunt has six target cells; their numbers are listed on the adult activity page. The example words pig, pen, pan begin with p. Accept pointing or a description when the child is still learning the letter name.

How do I print this?

Choose your vocabulary and paper size, then download the PDF. Print at actual size or 100%. Use the low-ink option for outline activities; colour-name cards still need their colour to teach the word. Cut-and-stack mini-books are available in the flashcard maker.
