Letter Y worksheets and activities

Explore Y and y through looking, playful marks and a short shared game. Capital Y has two upper branches joining one lower stem. Lowercase y also branches, with a section extending below the line in this font. Point to the meeting place and compare where each lower part ends. Choose one part of the pack rather than expecting every page to be completed in one sitting.

What we’re exploring

Recognise capital Y and lowercase y, compare their shapes and find them among other printed letters.

A little way to play

  1. Start with the large Y and y models. Say the letter name and invite your child to point to either form.
  2. Use a finger on the pale tracing models, then offer a pencil if wanted. Follow the child's school formation guidance rather than treating these outlines as stroke instructions.
  3. Try the letter hunt together. Each cell has a number so a grown-up can check the separate answer guide; the child can point, circle or colour a match.
  4. Arrange three paper strips into Y, leaving one stem below the fork. Draw y beside it and add a yellow border around the page. Point out that the colour choice is a reminder, not a rule about how the letter should look.
Make it easier

Cover most of the letter hunt and offer just two choices. Keep the Y / y model visible, and let an adult make the marks while your child points.

Try a little more

Compare Y with V: Y continues below the meeting point. Compare y and g by noticing the branching upper shape rather than a closed rounded body. Keep the examples large enough that those features are easy to distinguish.

For the grown-up

Yak, yellow and yogurt are example words. British labels may also spell the food yoghurt; both begin with y. Use a yak photograph if that animal is unfamiliar, or start with the colour yellow and a clearly written label. These are original recognition resources, not a school phonics programme or a developmental test.

Answers & naming help

The matching forms are Y and y. The hunt has six target cells; their numbers are listed on the adult activity page. The example words yak, yellow, yogurt begin with y. Accept pointing or a description when the child is still learning the letter name.

How do I print this?

Choose your vocabulary and paper size, then download the PDF. Print at actual size or 100%. Use the low-ink option for outline activities; colour-name cards still need their colour to teach the word. Cut-and-stack mini-books are available in the flashcard maker.
