Letter U worksheets and activities

Explore U and u through looking, playful marks and a short shared game. Capital U curves around at the bottom between two upright sides. Lowercase u has a similar lower curve, with a finishing stroke on the right in this font. Compare both forms while the page is upright and point to the open top. Choose one part of the pack rather than expecting every page to be completed in one sitting.

What we’re exploring

Recognise capital U and lowercase u, compare their shapes and find them among other printed letters.

A little way to play

  1. Start with the large U and u models. Say the letter name and invite your child to point to either form.
  2. Use a finger on the pale tracing models, then offer a pencil if wanted. Follow the child's school formation guidance rather than treating these outlines as stroke instructions.
  3. Try the letter hunt together. Each cell has a number so a grown-up can check the separate answer guide; the child can point, circle or colour a match.
  4. Make a wide U-shaped paper track with an open top. Move a toy slowly round the bottom, then draw a small u nearby. Add an umbrella picture in the empty space without covering the letter.
Make it easier

Cover most of the letter hunt and offer just two choices. Keep the U / u model visible, and let an adult make the marks while your child points.

Try a little more

Compare U with V by noticing the rounded base versus the pointed meeting place. Compare lowercase u and n with upright models; their curves sit at different ends. Name the correct model after a calm comparison.

For the grown-up

Umbrella, up and under are example words. Up and under can be acted out with a large toy and a box, making the words meaningful without needing extra picture cards. Point to the initial u in a clearly written label. These are original recognition resources, not a school phonics programme or a developmental test.

Answers & naming help

The matching forms are U and u. The hunt has six target cells; their numbers are listed on the adult activity page. The example words umbrella, up, under begin with u. Accept pointing or a description when the child is still learning the letter name.

How do I print this?

Choose your vocabulary and paper size, then download the PDF. Print at actual size or 100%. Use the low-ink option for outline activities; colour-name cards still need their colour to teach the word. Cut-and-stack mini-books are available in the flashcard maker.
