Letter V worksheets and activities

Explore V and v through looking, playful marks and a short shared game. V and v each have two sloping sides that meet at a point. The capital is usually larger, while the basic pattern is similar. Notice the sharp bottom meeting place and compare it with a rounded U. Choose one part of the pack rather than expecting every page to be completed in one sitting.

What we’re exploring

Recognise capital V and lowercase v, compare their shapes and find them among other printed letters.

A little way to play

  1. Start with the large V and v models. Say the letter name and invite your child to point to either form.
  2. Use a finger on the pale tracing models, then offer a pencil if wanted. Follow the child's school formation guidance rather than treating these outlines as stroke instructions.
  3. Try the letter hunt together. Each cell has a number so a grown-up can check the separate answer guide; the child can point, circle or colour a match.
  4. Place two paper strips into a V shape. Separate them and bring them together again at the lower point. Make a small v beneath the model and park a toy van beside the larger letter.
Make it easier

Cover most of the letter hunt and offer just two choices. Keep the V / v model visible, and let an adult make the marks while your child points.

Try a little more

Compare V and U first, then V and W if the child wants another challenge. W adds another change of direction. Do not rely on size alone when matching capitals and lowercase letters in different printed books.

For the grown-up

Van, vest and violin are example words. The word vest describes different garments in British and American English, so discuss the pictured item or choose van if that ambiguity distracts from the letter activity. A violin may need a photograph. These are original recognition resources, not a school phonics programme or a developmental test.

Answers & naming help

The matching forms are V and v. The hunt has six target cells; their numbers are listed on the adult activity page. The example words van, vest, violin begin with v. Accept pointing or a description when the child is still learning the letter name.

How do I print this?

Choose your vocabulary and paper size, then download the PDF. Print at actual size or 100%. Use the low-ink option for outline activities; colour-name cards still need their colour to teach the word. Cut-and-stack mini-books are available in the flashcard maker.
